The 2021 Astrofest Astrophotography Competition and Exhibition is open for entries! And now is a perfect time to be out and about taking images and getting ready to enter!
The competition is open from 1st October 2020 to 4th December 2020.
There are a variety of competition categories you can choose to enter. Astrotourism WA is proud to be sponsoring one of the awards – the award for the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape.
The 2020 inaugural winner of the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape was Luke Hetherington with his stunning image of “Windmill and the Stars” taken in the Shire of Lake Grace.
Who will be the 2021 Winner & Runner Up of the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape?
It’s time to get those cameras out and start capturing the beauty of WA’s dark night sky and stunning landscapes across our Astrotourism WA Town destinations.
There are two great prizes on offer for the winner and runner up of the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape Award!

The winner will receive a trophy and 2 nights at Mingenew Spring Caravan Park (valid for 12 months & subject to availability at time of booking), one meal for 2 at the Mingenew Hotel (valid for 12 months), a behind-the-scenes visit to the satellite tracking facility at Yarragadee (valid for 12 months). Provided by the Shire of Mingenew in conjunction with Astrotourism WA. Total value $300.

The runner up will receive a trophy and Bed and Breakfast Accommodation at The Heights B&B, Jurien Bay for 2 nights including breakfast (valid for 12 months and subject to availability at time of booking). Provided by The Heights B&B in conjunction with Astrotourism WA. Total value: $280
What are the Terms for the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape Award?
To qualify to enter an image into the Best Astrotourism WA Nightscape Award a photograph must:
- be taken by a resident of Western Australia;
- be taken in one of the Astrotourism Town Shire/Local Government localities (listed below); and
- feature terrestrial elements located in the Astrotourism WA Local Government locality

These Local Governments have been instrumental in supporting an effort in WA’s Mid West and Wheatbelt regions to raise awareness about WA’s incredible dark night sky.
Over 50 new places for astrophotography and stargazing have been mapped out for each location to encourage visitors to experience WA’s amazing dark country night sky. In a world where light pollution is destroying our view of the stars, WA’s Local Governments have recognised the important value of our natural asset and are working hard to protect and maintain it for generations to come.
