Kings Park Moon Rise

Watching the full Moon rise over Perth from Kings Park is a magical experience. What a way to begin your dark sky adventure in Western Australia!

Pack a picnic with friends, family or your fellow travellers and enjoy a magical evening watching a full Moon rise from delightful Kings Park.

The dates below have been chosen for the best times to see a full moon rise from vantage points on Fraser Avenue in Kings Park overlooking Perth City, the Swan River and Perth Hills. You may notice some times are the day after the exact date of a full Moon – this is because the full moon rise looks brighter if the night sky has darkened a bit after sunset.

Some full Moon rises are over the direction of the cityscape and others are over the direction of the river and South Perth. Please note, the times below are the moment the Moon rises from the horizon. Due to the height of the Perth Hills, the time when the moon becomes visible is delayed by 5-15 minutes, depending on which direction it rises from. Or it might hide behind a building as it rises! Who will be the first to spot it?!

There’s a total lunar eclipse on 3rd March 2026. For Western Australian observers, the eclipse commences before moon rise. At moon rise, observers will see the partial eclipse underway. Shortly after at 7.04pm, the Moon will begin to turn a stunning red/coppery colour, but you may have to wait until the night sky darkens more after sunset to see the full effect.

If you’re watching from Kings Park, due to the height of the Perth Hills, the time when the moon becomes visible is delayed by 5-15 minutes. In addition, the moon will rise over the cityscape and some of the buildings may hinder visibility.
