In the heart of WA’s Goldfields, you’ll find a night sky sparkling with billions of stars overhead. Menzies is a starry location where time stands still, and the Universe stretches out far beyond your imagination. A welcoming community will make you feel right at home, and for some, the outback gold town holds discoveries during the day with the stars waiting for you at night. The Shire of Menzies joined the Astrotourism Towns network in 2024 and is no more than a 1.5 hour drive from Kalgoorlie.
You can’t miss iconic Lake Ballard and the Antony Gormley Inside Australia statues that are dotted across the lake. There’s something mesmerising about the metal figures which were created from laser scans of the local community members! Stay on longer and you’ll find interesting Kookynie and Lake Niagara, or perhaps you’ll explore Menzies.
A town shaped by those who once sought their fortune, there a number of heritage buildings standing that serve as reminders of that prosperous era – walk the Wongi Way and Our Place town trails to find some hidden gems. And with some luck and a keen eye, you might even spot traces of the valuable rock that gave life to the town in the Visitor Centre.
The Milky Way on a dark sky night is just incredible, and the long stretch of stars wrap right around you. If you happen to find yourself in Menzies at full Moon time, take a moment in the evening to watch the large golden orb appear on the distant horizon.
