Grab your camera for a mini breakaway to the Milky Way that blankets the south eastern Wheatbelt. The horizons stretch into the distance and with it, comes the inspiration for magical moments. Just you, your camera, friends and family. Explore the historical farming area by day and revel in the star-spangled nights.

Day 1: Lake Grace (320 kms)

Travel through the tranquil Jarrahdale State Forest and Helena National Park as you meander your way to Lake Grace. You’ll have plenty of options to stop along the way in Brookton and Wickepin before arriving at your destination after lunch. In Lake Grace, take your pick of wonderful astrophotography opportunities. Taste the local wine, visit the museum and find your perfect location for night time photography. From Lake Grace to Lake King, you’ll find a view to suit. Call in at the Jam Patch for an evening under the stars to remember.

Day 2: Hyden/Wave Rock via Newdegate and Lake King (240 kms)

From Lake Grace, take the east road to Hyden that goes via Newdegate and Lake King. The expanse of this area is breathtaking. Like nowhere else on Earth! If you have the time to stay over and indulge in some more astrophotography, the Newdegate Silo Art makes a fantastic subject. If you can’t stay, make sure to catch the wonderful installation before travelling on to Hyden.

World-renowned Wave Rock is waiting for you near Hyden. It’s an iconic astrophotography destination and you’ll be able to try your hand at capturing the giant wave under the stars of the Milky Way.

Day 3: Kondinin (60 kms)

It’s only a short drive to Kondinin from Hyden and the magnificence of Wave Rock, so you have plenty of time to rustle up some breakfast and then check out the attractions in town including the Lace Place and Toy Soldier Museum. There’s a lot to discover as you wander around interesting Hyden.

Then it’s Kondinin for the night and there is a fantastic opportunity to get the camera out after dark! On top of Yeerakine Rock, not far from Kondinin, is a magnificent metal sculpture of the Light Horseman. The view to the south east will place the rising Milky Way right over the horse and you’ll be delighted with the results.

Overnight: Kondinin

Day 4: Narembeen (55 kms)

Wake up leisurely in Kondinin and take in the peace of the Wheatbelt before heading north to the vibrant community of Narembeen. Arrive in Narembeen for lunch, then put on your walking shoes and explore the wonderful art sculptures and trails in town. Drop into Apex Park to see the Giant Planisphere before heading to Avoca Farm for an evening picnic and a spot of stargazing or astrophotography.

Overnight: Narembeen

Avoca Farm is close to Narembeen and is ideal for astrophotography. There are a variety of scenes to capture.
Day 5: Return to Perth (280 kms)

It’s a delightful trip back home through Wheatbelt farming country and the Avon Valley. There are many small towns on the way including Northam where you can stop in for lunch and a visit to the Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge where you’ll discover the Six Nyoongar Aboriginal Seasons.
