Grab your camera and make your way to Skeet Memorial Park at the Forrestdale Lake Nature Reserve. There’s a winding boardwalk that leads you out to the northern end of the lake. The location is quite light polluted but there are still opportunities to enjoy some astrophotography time. There’s a wide-open southerly view across the lake. The boardwalk isn’t too “springy”, so a camera on a tripod can be set up. There is solid ground at one end that could be used if you prefer.
The great aspect of this location is the nearby playground and picnic facilities for the family to have some fun while you take the chance to snap some night time shots. Enjoy the amazing serenade from the thousands of local frogs!

Thompson Pool Reserve
What a great little spot for astrophotographers! Thompson Pool is in Roleystone, close to Roley Pools and offers an open landscape with boulders, seasonal water pools and the relaxing sounds of the river. There’s a handy car park, so it’s only a short walk to the rock and pools. If you visit on a night with a small crescent Moon, the natural light will illuminate the colours of the rock and surrounding bush.
Before the sun sets, there are several lovely walk trails to explore before setting up for an evening of night time photography. Who knows what other locations you’ll discover!

Walking trails surround the rock and you’re sure to find a great feature for a starry night sky image. Please be aware that there is no signage or information at this location, so you will need to use your phone map to locate Boulder Rock. There is no dedicated car park, so please take care when parking alongside Brookton Highway.
